The Chair of the Local Emergency Management Committee convened an emergency meeting this morning, 19 January 2024 to discuss the recent service disruptions and possible further disruptions that may affect residents moving forward. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Shire of Merredin, Western Power, Department of Communities, Merredin Volunteer Fire & Rescue Services, St John Ambulance, Merredin State Emergency Services, Merredin IGA, Merredin District Hospital, Merredin Energy, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Merredin Police, and Merredin Bush Fire Brigades.
Western Power and the Water Corporation are urging residents to minimise water and electricity usage in the coming days while they continue to restore full service across the Wheatbelt. Both organisations are encouraging local governments to spread the word to report any issues or faults that residents are aware of to their respective hotline numbers.
These are: Western Power – 13 13 51 and Water Corporation – 13 13 75.
To support those that are still experiencing power outages, the Shire will be opening the Merredin Regional Community & Leisure Centre tonight, 19 January 2024 between 6:00pm – 8:00pm for any residents wanting to use the facilities for charging of appliances, or showering. During this time the bar area will be airconditioned and provide a cool space for those who need it.
The Merredin Regional Library will be open tomorrow, Saturday, 20 January 2024 between 10:00am – 12:00pm and is fully airconditioned for those who require a cool place or to charge appliances with access to free Wi-Fi.
The Merredin District Olympic Swimming Pool will be open at its usual times tomorrow, Saturday, 20 January 2024 and Sunday, 21 January 2024 between 12:00pm – 6:00pm for those who would like to cool off.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated staff at Western Power and the Water Corporation for the tireless work they have completed to restore power and ensure the continuation of water supply to the town, in less than ideal conditions and often working throughout the night.
If you require support from the Shire, please do not hesitate to contact Acting Chief Executive Officer, Codi Brindley-Mullen on 0419 241 600.
