This prestigious award, established by Council in 2023, was created to acknowledge and recognise individuals who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and made significant contributions to our community. It is named in honour of Merredin’s last known WWII veteran, Mr. Edward ‘Eddie’ Johnston, a man whose life exemplified service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of others.
Eddie Johnston, who sadly passed away in May 2023, devoted his life not only to his country but to our town from the time he arrived in Merredin in 1955. Over the years, he enriched our community through his involvement in organisations such as the Civic Bowling Club, the Merredin Lodge, the Merredin Agricultural Society, the South Merredin Primary School P&C, and the Berringa Frail Aged Lodge. Eddie's dedication serves as a lasting legacy and a shining example of the impact one individual can have on a community.
As we remember Eddie’s significant contributions to our community, it is our honour for us to announce that the winner of the Mr. Edward Johnston Award for 2025 is Mr. Romolo Patroni.
Romolo has been an extraordinary asset to our community, consistently demonstrating dedication and selflessness through his extensive volunteer work. His contributions span a variety of organisations, each a reflection of his unwavering commitment to service.
Romolo’s remarkable tenure with St John Ambulance showcased his tireless dedication to helping others in their moments of greatest need. His work has continued across various roles, including as both Secretary and Treasurer of the Men’s Shed—a vital space for fostering community connection and support, and also as a dedicated volunteer for the Catholic Church, always stepping up to assist wherever help is needed.
His leadership extends further as Chairperson of the Community Resource Centre, where his leadership supports local development, education, and resources. Romolo also works to preserve our history through his support of local museums, ensuring that our stories and heritage are celebrated for generations to come.
As a Shire Councillor, Romolo has also worked hard to represent, and advocate for, the needs and aspirations of our community. Whether it’s supporting local initiatives, lobbying for vital resources, or advocating for infrastructure improvements, Romolo’s dedication to Merredin’s progress and prosperity is widely appreciated.
But above all, what truly sets Romolo apart is his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get the job done—no matter the task. Whether it’s leading a major project or quietly lending a helping hand, Romolo exemplifies the true spirit of volunteerism.
