At the August Ordinary Council Meeting held on 20 August 2024, Shire President Mark McKenzie announced his decision to step down from his role as Shire President due to competing time commitments as a local business owner and his responsibilities as President of the WA Division of the Australian Funeral Directors Association. Despite stepping down as Shire President, Cr. McKenzie will continue to serve the Merredin community as a Councillor until his current term concludes in October 2027. “I know we are doing some amazing things for the greater Merredin community, and I wish to thank the Merredin residents for their trust as well as the many Councillors I have worked alongside. It has been an absolute honour,” he said.
Cr. McKenzie has been a dedicated member of the Council since his election in 2019. He assumed the role of Shire President in 2021 and was re-elected by his fellow Elected Members following the 2023 election. Throughout his tenure, Cr. McKenzie has been instrumental in advancing key community projects, including the recently inaugurated Apex Park | Danjoo Waabininy Boodja, the Pioneer Park and Town Centre Redevelopments, and the restoration of Merredin’s historic Water Tower.
“As Shire President, Cr. McKenzie has successfully led our community through a number of challenges, while also supporting the improvement of facilities and services to our Town,” said Deputy President Renee Manning. "We are pleased that he will continue to serve as a Councillor."
A Special Council Meeting will take place on Tuesday, 10 September 2024, to elect a new Shire President.
