The Shire of Merredin marked a significant milestone last week with the soft opening of its newly redeveloped Town Centre during the highly anticipated Gala Night festivities.
The event brought the community together for an evening of celebration, showcasing the vibrant and accessible space that has transformed the heart of Merredin. Families and visitors explored the upgraded precinct, which features improved walkability, modern, high-quality infrastructure, and enhanced facilities, all designed to strengthen community connectedness and draw visitors to the region.
The Town Centre redevelopment was funded through a combination of Shire and federal funding, with the Australian Government contributing approximately $2.1 million in total.
Shire President Donna Crook said the revitalised Town Centre embodies the Shire’s vision to position Merredin as a cultural hub and tourist destination.
“This project not only delivers essential upgrades to our infrastructure but also creates a welcoming, inclusive, and modern space that benefits both our residents and regional visitors. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved and grateful for the support of the Australian Government in making this vision a reality,” Councillor Crook said.
The redevelopment of the Town Centre is part of a larger staged CBD revitalisation including Apex Park | Danjoo Waabininy Boodja, Pioneer Park, and the Water Tower, with the aim of supporting economic development in the region, promoting Merredin as a cultural precinct, and improving walkability of the town.
The soft opening of the Town Centre allowed the community to enjoy the space ahead of the formal grand opening planned for early 2025, which will coincide with the completion of the Water Tower, which will complete the approximate $10 million CBD redevelopment project.
